AquaBlu Mosaics Volunteers with Coral Restoration Foundation Video Transcript
Earlier this year, AquaBlu volunteered with the Coral Restoration Foundation in Key Largo, an unforgettable experience. This hands-on work not only provided valuable insights into coral reef conservation but also solidified our commitment to protecting these delicate ecosystems.
Our learning began in the classroom, where we discovered fascinating facts about coral reefs, including that Florida has the third-largest barrier reef worldwide. The presentation was engaging, leaving us eager to explore further.
Reefs, though covering a small portion of the ocean floor, are vital ecosystems. They support over a million species, showcasing incredible biodiversity. Additionally, barrier reefs act as natural barriers, protecting coastlines and safeguarding both property and human life.
Coral reefs are vital beyond marine life. They regulate ocean CO2, sustaining marine ecosystems. Over 3 billion people rely on fish for food, connecting human well-being to reef health.
Reefs have a significant economic impact. Activities like diving and snorkeling boost economies. In 2014, they contributed $11 billion to the US GDP, highlighting the need for coral reef conservation. It's easy to forget about the immense importance of coral reefs. Out of sight, out of mind, right? This learning experience opened our eyes to the profound impact corals have beyond just marine life.
After the classroom session, we practiced coral planting with simulated materials. This hands-on training prepared us for underwater restoration work, which aims to revive damaged reefs and boost marine biodiversity.
The Coral Restoration Foundation collects healthy coral fragments and transplants them to offshore nurseries. These underwater 'tree' structures maximize growth by providing sunlight and nutrients, allowing the corals to thrive.
Over 6 to 12 months, the foundation monitors coral growth. Mature colonies are then transplanted to carefully selected reef sites. Divers clean these sites and attach the corals with marine-safe adhesives, ensuring secure placement and minimal harm to the coral.
Continued care is essential. The foundation monitors coral health, protecting them from threats. Over time, colonies flourish, creating new habitats. The Coral Restoration Foundation's success shows the power of collective action in revitalizing ocean habitats.
The highlight of our trip was visiting the coral nurseries. Underwater, we saw vibrant corals swaying on 'trees.' We helped clean them, learning how these nurseries boost coral growth and survival.
This dive was more than an exploration; it was a commitment to preserving these wonders. At AquaBlu, we support ocean conservation through our pool tiles and mosaics, featuring coral reef scenes to inspire underwater havens.
If we neglect our oceans, these customized pools could be the only vibrant underwater world we see. Let's raise awareness about coral reefs and support the Coral Restoration Foundation to protect our oceans and our planet.
